These math journals focus on missing numbers and what comes before and after a given number. If students can see the flexibility between numbers, that will strengthen their number sense that much more! Students will cut and paste each strip in their math journal. Math journals can be composition notebooks, spiral notebooks, etc. Students will fill in the missing numbers or write a sequence of numbers, depending on the math journal chosen for the activity. Teachers can give smiley faces, stickers, etc. to students who successfully finish before others. Those who do finish earlier than others can practice writing their numerals until other students have finished.
These math journals are ENGAGING activities for students. Math journals are also an excellent assessment tool for teachers!
