Helping students understand various problem solving strategies is key when building their number sense as mathematicians. One of those problem solving strategies is using pictures to solve problems. Students will use drawings of objects, pictures, etc. to solve the subtraction equation that they will have pasted at the top of their math journal.
These math journals are ENGAGING for students because it allows them to be creative when thinking of what objects to draw when solving their subtraction equation. Plus, students will be pasting, drawing, and writing the answer; these math journals were one of my students' favorites!
