Helping students understand various problem solving strategies is key when building their numbers sense as mathematicians. One of those problem solving strategies is using pictures to solve problems. Students will paste the math journal at the top of the page. You can choose to read it together as a class, small group, and/or individually based on your students' needs. Students will use drawing of objects, pictures, etc. to solve the subtraction story problem. Then, students will write the equation that represents the story problem. Students are challenged to the next level; not just drawing a picture and orally sharing the answer, but representing the problem with an equation as well!
These math journals are ENGAGING for students because it allows them to draw pictures to problem solve and help represent what they are thinking.
