As students arrive in the classroom, have them read the mystery word riddle at their seat. Read the riddle together as a class (more than once to build fluency). Circle the sight words/word wall words in the mystery word riddle. Ask for three to four students for their answer. Discuss any other possibilities. (Vote if needed and make a tally graph). Read the riddle together and underline the clues. Write the answer together as a class. Students can then draw a picture based on the answer to the riddle. The kids that I taught loved reading these riddles. You could use it every day or once a week as a treat for your morning work/morning meeting time. Answer key include on the last page of the packet!
