Here’s the ultimate PowerPoint and handout for your Kindergarten Orientation! It can also be used for Back-to-School Night or Literacy Night or even for professional development. Parts of the presentation are editable to allow for these changes.
The presentation focuses on emergent literacy—all the important concepts critical for parents of kindergartners to know. The slides have a good mix of real photos and clip art. There is not a lot of text on each slide, rather the images provide visuals parents can remember as you share the information aloud. (This is a much more engaging way to present than just reading information listed on slides.)
Each slide includes a very detailed narrative. You could read the script word-for-word, or study it and present the highlights. I’ve spent hours and hours trying to distill important points down to a small amount of information parents can easily understand. I drew on my 26 years experience working with early readers and writers to give you the best info to present!
Topics covered include:
*The importance of family involvement in education.
*The advantages of reading to children from the earliest age possible.
*Recommended time for reading to kindergartners at home daily.
*How early reading creates a HABIT and love of reading that is likely to stick for life.
*How reading at home and the number of books in the home have a huge impact on reading success.
*Easy ways to interact with young children with books.
*Creating access to lots and lots of books in the home.
*Giving children access to writing tools.
*Encouraging writing with our youngest writers.
*Responding to their writing.
*The importance of teaching children to write their names.
*Noticing print in the environment. Pointing out the letters and sounds all around you.
*Providing a balanced reading experience for children.
*The importance of reading informational books to grow students’ understanding about the world.
*Giving the child choice in reading.
*The importance of phonemic awareness for reading and writing success.
*What phonemic awareness is.
*Easy ways to work with children on rhyming, blending and segmenting.
*The importance of keeping home reading/writing experiences positive and fun.
*How reading with children is a wonderful bonding opportunity.
There is also a one-page handout so parents or caregivers walk away with a summary of all the points presented! There is a second copy of the handout which is editable.
