COLOR BOOKS FOR KINDERGARTEN
EXTRA: Print this book on light blue paper. The child will be drawing images in white crayon.
These books are for the beginning weeks of Kindergarten. I wrote them using the color words and a few sight words. They are an excellent way to start the reading process. My partner and I used them the 5 years of Kindergarten that we taught together.
STRATEGY: Use one book each week of school. Print enough for the whole class. Staple each book on the left top corner.
Put the words in the book on cards on a slot chart and go over them.
Name the pictures in the book for all of the children.
Divide the children into groups of 5 during center time.
Give each child in a group the book to color.
Have each child separately point to the words and read the book to a teacher.
The teacher signs the book on the last page.
Book goes home to be read and signed again and again.
Book is returned for a sticker, and then sent home for keeps.
Meanwhile the teacher is working on a phonics program and teaching the sounds and letters. We used Zoo Phonics for this.
Here’s our favorite lesson plan for using the books:
Week 1 of School --- BLUE Book -- "blue"
Week 2 of School --- RED Book --- "red" "a"
Week 3 of School --- YELLOW Book -- “yellow” “I” “see”
Week 4 of School --- GREEN Book -- “green” “the”
Week 5 of School --- ORANGE Book – “orange” “s”ending
Week 6 of School --- PURPLE Book – “purple” “my”
Week 7 of School --- BROWN Book -- “brown”
Week 8 of School --- BLACK Book -- “black” “can”
Week 9 of School --- PINK Book ----- “pink” “you” “question mark”
Week 10 of School - WHITE Book – “white” “make”
At Home Reading Book
Your child is bringing home a small book to read at home. Please have your child point to each word with his dominant index finger as he/she reads it. Have him/her read this book to 3 or 4 people at home this weekend. Each person should sign the last page of the book. If your child returns this book to school next week, he or she will receive a sticker. There will be a new color book coming home each week. Thanks
If you wish to print these books for the whole class, please email me and I will tell you an easier way to do it.
