I use weekly songs and poems with my kindergarten class to teach Concept-of-Word skills. I have students find certain letters, words, spaces between words, long words, short words, high-frequency words, rhyming pairs, punctuation, vowel patterns, blends, etc.
At the end of the week, students glue their copy of the poem into their Reading Notebook and take it home to read the poem and practice the “Can You” activities with their parents. The Reading Notebook eventually gets filled up with songs and poems that students are able to read independently.
Included in this packet are 37 poems with "Can You" activities listed for each. A parent letter is also included to teach parents how to use the Reading Notebook with their child.
*The "Can You" activities grow with complexity throughout the year.
*I have students glue a copy of the Parent Letter inside the front cover of the notebook so the directions are always accessible to parents.
