Remember, Ohioans, Ohio Revised Code 3313.673 says that all kindergarteners must be screened for communication by November 1st!!

I developed this assessment in cooperation with the kindergarten teachers at my school to help me better assess language functioning skills for students in my district.

This test assesses receptive and expressive language skills for: adjectives, prepositions, convergent naming, divergent naming, grammar, following directions, wh- questions, and sentence repetition. There is also a small screener for articulation and space allotted for notes on pragmatic/social skills, fluency, and voice.

This screening assessment is recommended for use with 5-year-olds and/or kindergarten-aged students; however, with clinical judgement may be used on other populations. It is recommended for native/fluent English speakers.

Administration takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Scoring can be done concurrently with administration.

I attempted to "norm" the assessment by collecting detailed information about my students, areas of the test, pass/fail demographics, etc. The students used for "norming" were also administered the PLS-4 Screening Test for 5-Year-Olds and a strong concurrent validity was found (students who passed the PLS-4 also passed the Haber KST, and visa-verse). I found that this assessment provided better information about deficiencies when students did not pass. Please check out the preview for more in-depth technical information.

Cut-off criterion for passing each section and the overall screening assessment is suggested (but you can use clinical judgement to make adjustments best for your setting). Students should pass 5/8 sections for language to "pass" the assessment.

The 39-page stimulus book should be printed in color. I recommend laminating and binding the book together or assembling into a binder. The record form is 2 pages in length and I recommend printing front/back.

Considering the cost of other 5-year-old language screeners from big publishers, this assessment is a steal!

This assessment supports the following Kindergarten CCSS:
SL.2 - confirm understanding of a text read aloud by answering questions about key details (also RL.1 & RIT.1)
L.1 - demonstrate command of conventions of standard English grammar and usage when speaking (c. form regular plural nouns, d. understands question words, e. prepositions)
L.5 - explore word relationships (a. sort common objects into categories, b. understanding of frequently occurring adjectives)
