Kindergarteners get so excited when they can spot a word they know in books. As emerging readers they are not able to read everything in books but they can begin to slow down and look for words they do know. I use these graphs with my students and they love doing them. I model whole group and then it becomes an independent station while I work with with small groups. Students look for words as they run their finger along the sentences in any book. If they find one they color in one square on the graph. As an added bonus the students begin to learn about graphing.
I have included 15 premade worksheet and one blank.
This activity meets CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3c Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does).
