Have you noticed how cheap flashlights have gotten? It seems like everywhere I go there are cute, colorful LED Flashlights! Have you also noticed how much kids love flashlights? When you put both of these things together, you have an opportunity to make some magic happen in your classroom!
Start by printing the cards on card stock. you must print on both sides of the paper. So you don’t waste paper and ink, do some test prints with scrap paper until you figure out how to get them double sided using your printer. I use ink/toner saver mode to do this. Here is a picture (next slide) of my settings. I have an HP Laser Jet Pro 400. My printer doesn’t print double sided automatically when I print on card stock, so I have to manually insert the pages. This took a couple of practice trials to see if I needed
to flip on the long side or the short. The short side was the one for me. Your printer will probably be different. It will definitely be worth you effort, though. My students LOVE this!
Once you get the cards printed, laminated and hole punched, put them on a loose leaf ring and let the magic begin.
You could start with the activity in a small group and move it to a station/center. Set down some rules about using the flashlights, not shining them in anyone’s eyes and being sure to turn them off. To see the magic, hold the flashlight behind the card. Move it around until you see the word Now your all set! Enjoy!
