Detailed, step-by-step lesson plans on how to effectively teach writing to our youngest writers is FINALLY here! As we know, teaching kindergarten is a different world so it would naturally require a solid, well-designed approach to ensure we are not only teaching our kinders how to write, but how to write WELL, and to LOVE writing! This is difficult work and does not happen overnight, in fact, it takes 3 Phases (approximately 16 weeks) to successfully launch our writers onto the path of writing well...and lovin' every minute of it!
The 3 Phases included in KINDERGARTEN WRITING are:
PHASE 1: Focus on Talking – 3 detailed lesson plans
(Takes approximately 2 weeks for a 20 student class)
PHASE 2: Focus on Drawing – 14 detailed lesson plans
(Spend at least 3-6+ weeks focusing on drawing)
PHASE 3: Focus on Writing – 15 detailed lesson plans
(Spend 4-6+ weeks focusing on writing)
TRANSITION PHASE Lessons – 5 detailed lesson plans
(Spend at least 5 days transitioning from bound books to writing folders)
Over 100 pages of lesson plans, teaching tips, suggestions, and possible extensions are included with this unit. Teacher management forms, suggestions for use, mentor texts, effective strategies for using mentor texts, several paper selections, and labels for writing folders are provided. Best of all, ideas on how to teach EARLY READING STRATEGIES through the teaching of writing is embedded throughout this unit.
Do you value research-based teaching, but don't have the time to study it? This unit of writing for kindergarten is built upon best practice for teaching writing. I have been trained by and have studied the experts: Lucy Calkins, Katie Wood Ray, Matt Glover, among others.
Is this approach practical for a real classroom, with real kids? Absolutely. As a teacher, interventionist, literacy coach, and reading specialist, I know it works and have tried it with the toughest kids in the toughest classrooms, just to be sure! I will not stand behind something that doesn't work because we do not have time for this and neither do our students.
Please know that this unit of study will change your teaching for the better. Expert and novice teachers will all become writing teachers, teachers that recognize the thinking that must occur in our writers and supporting them every step of the way. This approach makes learning how to write accessible to all levels of writers and all levels of teachers. A shift this big requires support...for the teacher! Included in this unit is access to a member-only Facebook group. As questions or issues come up, you will have direct access to me and other members going through this process.
I believe there is nothing more we can do for our students than try to better our teaching a little bit everyday. This is my way of contributing all that I have learned through the incredible experiences I've had the opportunity to be a part of. Thank you for the opportunity to share my learning with you.
