This product is a zip file that includes a printable booklet for several pet-themed fiction and nonfiction books to read aloud and a short research section for students to choose a pet to learn about. The research section is designed to use informational books from Capstone that can be purchased in print or interactive eBook format, but you can substitute your own informational books or online text about cats, dogs, fish, birds, guinea pigs, and hamsters just as easily.
The booklet is in both PDF and Microsoft Publisher files, so it can be printed and used as is or edited to suit your needs. There are also 2 versions of the booklet: One for librarians or library media specialists to use during library classes, and one for classroom teachers to use as a literacy center or with a read-aloud.
Each half-page includes a reader's response drawing (or simple writing) activity the book listed. As a teacher-librarian, I use each page for one 40-minute block of time in which I read the book listed, students check out new books from the library, and they do the response activity. During the research classes, students independently listen to a pet book and label the parts of their chosen pet.
Printable cards to access the eBooks are also included with instructions on how to create QR codes to access the interactive eBook links, and how to put the QR codes onto the cards. The QR cards are can be customized in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Publisher depending on your preference.
Also included are lesson plans for the unit, all aligned to National and PA Common Core Standards, PA Academic Standards, and AASL Information Literacy Standards.
