This is a 2 week Kindy Program about reduce, reuse, recycle, focussing on sustainability. It has been designed for the Australian Curriculum (though I'm sure the content can translate across easily).
Australian EYLF Links:
Children are effective communicators
• Children interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes
• Children engage with a range of texts and gain meaning from these texts
• Children become socially responsible and show respect for the environment
The following exemplar texts have been used:
The Little Red Hen by Paul Galdone
This book is about a hen that does all the work around the farm, with no assistance from other animals. When the hen has finished all the work, she makes sure to reap all the rewards herself too. This text will be used to introduce children to the topic of being helpful and will assist them in developing an awareness of their own helpful contributions within the classroom, home and environment.
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
This text is a beautifully illustrated short story about the relationship between a young boy and tree. The tree looks after the boy his whole life, giving everything it has to him until finally the boy cuts down the tree to use the wood. This text will be used to introduce the children to the idea of turning trees into other products so children can make the link between the things they use and the environment. This text also highlights the relationship between humans and the environment, and will guide the children towards understanding the impact they can have on the world around them.
Don’t Throw That Away by Lara Bergen
This text is an informational text about the variety of common objects the children may find around the home and classroom and their other uses. It encourages children to be more respectful towards the environment and to consider how they can minimise waste. This book will be used to introduce the idea of reusing and recycling paper related items within the classroom.
