Get up and write!
“Kinesthetics” refers to movement; in this case, to helping students become better writers by getting out of their seats and acting out punctuation. Included is the lesson plan (with CCSS listed for grades 3-5), directions for each punctuation action, a writing sample, and the revised version of the writing sample.
I have had enormous success with this activity! ALL of my intermediate writers benefit from seeing the before and after results in their writing based on how it makes their bodies move, and this is especially true for English Language Learners and special education students.
Kids get a kick out of being told they’ll be doing a writing activity and should therefore stand up, exchanging quizzical glances that burst into smiles when they catch on, BEGGING for more the next day.
I hope your students will enjoy it and gain as much from it as mine do!
