45 word puzzle. This is an active learning resource designed to ensure that students are familiar with difficult or unusual from Act 5 of the play by William Shakespeare.
Words in the puzzle are..adder, adversary, arraign, attaint, avouched, banns, beguiled, captive, censure, champion, confess, conspirator, duke, endure, exalt, falchion, foe, forgive, ghost, heinous, herald, jealous, jester, machination, manifest, manifold, mercy, patrimony, plague, poison, prison, prophet, reprieve, sacrifice, semblance, token, traitor, treason, trifle, valiant, vanquished, vice, widow, woe and writ. The definitions I have used in the clue text correspond to the meanings of the words in the play.
Although students often see the puzzle format as a fun task, it is an active learning activity. It can be quite a challenging activity for students with a poor vocabulary.
This is the type of activity that you could use with early finishers, or give to a sub teacher, or use as a filler on a day when you have nothing else prepared.
A word bank is supplied to support students. You could redact this to make the puzzle more challenging.
The solution is printed on the second page. Download the preview file to see the solution and the grid.
