I created this unit for King Lear for my AP Literature classes. The unit opens with a sample calendar, quizzes and keys for all five acts, as well as a study guide with reading comprehension and interpretive questions, as well as other exercises for understanding. Many of the discussion questions could be used as impromptu prompts, but specific essay prompts for each act are included. The unit test has an objective section (multiple choice) and an impromptu essay with several prompts offered. I assign a Shakespearean sonnet with this unit, so I have included that assignment. I ask students to find and analyze literary criticisms, so I put in a sample of the analysis handout I use. In order to focus on textual analysis, I also ask students to practice a strict essay structure so there is a handout on that, as well as an essay template and a few samples to clarify the structure. To encourage formal discussion, I have an assignment I designate “Discussion Tasks,” which asks students to generate questions and comments that delve into the characters, themes, and literary techniques of the work, encouraging academic discussion.
