Kingdom Sort Cards by WardBiology
What? These sort cards are a great visual practice tool that will help students learn the characteristics and examples of organisms that belong to each Kingdom of living things. The kingdoms included are Eubacteria, Archaea, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. I have coordinated the characteristics to go along with the Pearson Interactive Science book The Diversity of Life, but they are very general characteristics that can be integrated into any life science classroom, regardless of textbook!
How? Print out all of the cards. I recommend laminating them into a few sets that can be used in small groups in your classroom. Students will first pick out the large Kingdom cards, creating a row of them on top of their desk (or on the floor, or wherever!) so that they smaller square characteristics cards can be sorted underneath. To check for correct answers, you can first give students the “clue” of how many cards should be under each Kingdom card. If they don’t have the correct numbers, let them wrestle with it for a little bit to see if they can figure out where they went wrong! I have also provided an answer key. This could be shared with students digitally as a view-only for them to check their own answers after you have viewed their work. Or, you can use it for yourself to check their answers when they think they are finished. Clean up the cards and put them back into storage envelopes or ziplock baggies, and use over and over for a great reusable resource!
When you download this resource you will get a PDF file that has links to a few resources:
1. A link to make a copy of an EDITABLE version of the Sort Cards.
2. A link to make a copy of an EDITABLE version of the Sort Cards KEY.
3. A PDF file of the Sort Cards.
NOTE: THESE RESOURCES ARE ALL CREATED THROUGH GOOGLE SLIDES. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU ONLY DOWNLOAD IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO VIEWING AND EDITING THROUGH A GAFE PLATFORM. PLEASE DO NOT DISTRIBUTE YOUR EDITABLE COPIES.
