Emergent Reader Kittens (Ten Frames and Number Words 0-20) ---
This emergent reader, “Kittens” is connected to several CCGPS listed below. This pack includes three “Kittens” books. The books are designed so that you can copy the book, cut it in half, staple, and then it is ready for use.
The first "Kitten" book has 22 pages including a title page “Kittens,” and then each of the remaining 21 pages contains black and white pictures at the top of each page and a sentence under the picture.
Each sentence says “I see (number words zero-twenty) kittens.”

The second 22 page book includes a title page “Kittens,” and then each of the remaining 21 pages contains a blank ten frame at the top of each page and a sentence under the ten frames. This book is interactive with students being required to fill in the ten frames to match the number in the sentence. Pages are not numbered so that the teacher has flexibility to either staple the pages in number order 0-20 or to mix them up to check to see if students correctly recognize the number words. Students can either draw dots or color in the ten frames to show the correct number or use the included kitten manipulatives to cut and paste the correct number of kittens onto the ten frames. Two pages of kitten manipulatives are included for you to copy as needed for the book. One page of kitten manipulatives is for zero-ten and the other page is for eleven-twenty.
The third book has the following pages with matching pictures. A second copy of this third book is included with the last word on each page missing for students to complete telling what the kitten is doing. This copy allows for differentiation for students to write a word to complete the sentence. The pages include the sentences below. The second copy has the last word of each sentence missing with a blank line to fill in the word.

Students can benefit from this reader by tracking print, identifying spaces between words, identifying particular letters of the alphabet, recognizing sounds (beginning, middle, and ending) in each word, and reading sight words and grade level text. For extension activities, students could add another sentence to each page to add details. The black and white pictures allow students the opportunity to color the pictures. This reader is great for guided reading groups, homework, or literacy center activities. It also includes math standards with a ten frame on each page with a matching number of kittens.
