Interactive school posters offer students a variety of fun and interesting ways to apply their knowledge and insight in some of their classes. The Knights of the Realm Activity contains diverse mathematical concepts through advanced algebra as well as some historical content.
Use the two 8.5" x 11" colored masters to produce enough colored back-to-back copies for a classroom set. It is advisable to have the copies laminated for future use. The " Knights of the Realm" activity could be used as either an extended individual or group challenge.
Make sure that the students who will be participating in this activity read the Background and Procedure listed on the poster and also listed below.
Background Centuries ago, there existed a secret society whose purpose was to preserve and encourage mathematical ideas throughout the realm. The knights held their meetings in an inner sanctum of a castle. Access to this room requires an application of a series of mathematical interpretations and computations. You have attained a parchment showing schematic details of the castle along with specific directions about entry to various areas of the castle. However, some of the directions have either worn away or are indecipherable. You have decided that you will travel to the castle and apply your mathematical skills to try to gain entry to the inner sanctum.
Procedure: Carefully read the information given for each obstacle that you encounter. Then using only the materials and information available, record your response(s) for each obstacle. When completed, give your responses to your instructor who will determine whether or not you have earned the tile of Knight of the Realm, along with the right to be referred to as Sir or Madam.
When the activity is completed, each student should turn in the completed responses to the instructor. To enhance student motivation, a "Knights of the Realm" certificate is included.
