These games are perfect for partners or groups of 3! I use them with 3rd graders as part of my reading intervention program. It's a great way for students to practice decoding short vowel words. The Knock It Off game is easy for students to play independently.
Students start with 15 counters (transparent counters work great, but are not required). Each time they read a word correctly, they can place one of their counters on the game board, covering the word they just read. If another student's counter is already on the word, they can "knock it off" and replace their partner's counter with one of their own. If they pull the same word more than once, they can put multiple counters on that word. Once a student has 2 counters on a word, they cannot be knocked off. There is no limit to how many counters a student can place on a word.
Prep is easy! All you have to do is print the gameboards (provided in color and black and white) and the game pieces. Cut out the game pieces and place in some type of container (I like to use small gift bags from DollarTree). Pull out some counters, and you are ready to go!
Helpful hint: Encourage students to shake/ mix-up the word cards on a regular basis.
