Product Description
Each of us, no matter how old, is curious about the future….what WILL the world be like in 2081? Kurt Vonnegut wondered this too and created a tyrannical world where being “equal” means being monotone, flat, and forced to subvert any skills, or face government retribution. Vonnegut’s “Harrison Bergeron” is a fantastic way to introduce the genre of Science Fiction. Begin class with two-column notes comparing the present year with that of 2013. Then, no matter if your students are 11-18, enthralled by the activator, give a brief synopsis explaining the protagonist in the short story is a 14 year old boy: Harrison Bergeron. The creative writing assignment included depends on students understanding of point-of-view—first—and gives each a choice of two prompts that even your students who balk at having to write will take on, become, and shine as either Harrison Bergeron himself or the ultimate evil woman-in-charge, the Handicapper General. Happy creative writing! Best, Rockermom
