Engage reluctant readers and writers with the powerful and rhythmic poetry of Kwame Alexander! I love using Alexander's works to show even my sportiest students that poetry is fun, awesome, and easy.

This lesson includes a PowerPoint introduction that guides your students through important terms (rhyme, slant rhyme, internal rhyme, allusion, simile, metaphor, and parallel structure), background information on Kwame Alexander, the text of his poem "Josh Bell," questions for discussion, and directions for writing and then critiquing a poem of his own. Also included is a suggested lesson plan, as well as a copy of the text, an analysis worksheets, and worksheets to guide students through brainstorming, writing, and then critiquing their own poem.

This could also be a great lesson for introducing The Crossover or any other of Kwame Alexander's books for class.
