Kwanzaa is a holiday that is celebrated in many African-American homes across the world. It is a holiday that is also included in many Christmas Around the World units. After reading a book about Kwanzaa this book is a great resource to use with your students. It introduces and reviews with the children the 6 key symbols/items of Kwanzaa. You will find the sentence pattern This is, on all of the pages of the book ending with a Kwanzaa word. In addition there is a picture for the children to color that matches the sentence. The children will read the following sentences. This is a kinara (kee-NAH-rah), a candle holder. This is a mkeka (muh-KAY-kuh), a straw mat. This is the kikombe (kee-KOM-bay), the unity cup. This is muhindi (moo-HEEN-dee), or corn. This is a zawadi(zah-WAH-dee), a gift. This is mazao (mah-ZAH-oh), fruits and vegetables. Your students will enjoy learning to say the Swahili words that are included on each page.

The skills include concepts of print, recognizing sight words, vocabulary, punctuation, and sentence structure.
