Kwanzaa is truly a celebration of values, and comes at the perfect time of year to re-establish the values that strengthen our community. That can mean our family, classroom community, or larger community outside of the classroom.
The holiday of Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor at California State University. It is celebrated in many homes as an African-American and Pan-African holiday from December 26-January 1. The principles of Kwanzaa are celebrated as a way of maintaining strong family and community connections, with a respect for our Earth and the contributions of every individual.
Having celebrated Kwanzaa for so many years with my students, I believe that this holiday has a strong message to share in the values it upholds. These are values common to many cultures and significant to all human beings.
