Kwanzaa is right around the corner and what better way to engage students than through integrated Kwanzaa activities aligned to Common Core Standards. In this Kwanzaa unit, students will complete a literature study on "Seven Spools of Thread: A Kwanzaa Story" and complete the following lessons:
--Create a Kwanzaa KWL chart
--Define new Kwanzaa related vocabulary terms using color vocabulary posters
--Retell story
--Determine story's central lesson or message
--Analyze character traits based on evidence from the text
--Summarize key Kwanzaa terms, symbols and traditions
--Read and follow directions to make a mkeka (straw mat)
--Make vibunzi (corn) and mazao (bowl of fruits and veggies), two key components of Kwanzaa

These Kwanzaa lessons can be used during reading and social studies time and modified to meet specific student needs. Detailed lesson plans included for each activity!
