In this highly-engaging lesson, students complete three hands-on activities to learn about the history and origins of Kwanzaa (also spelled Kwanza).
Students complete a guided reading assignment with "check-in's" to make sure they are understanding the content. In this first activity, students are introduced to Kwanzaa's birth in the 1960s, the seven principles emphasized during the celebration, modern traditions, and how elements from African culture are highlighted in the holiday!
Then, students investigate a "The Customs of Kwanzaa" handout to familiarize themselves further with this holiday! Students are introduced to the colors (and their meaning) of Kwanzaa, the common gifts that are exchanged, what might be served at Karamu feast, and famous celebrities who take part in the celebration!
Students then take their knowledge and put it on display by completing a "News Cast" assignment where they, in the shoes of journalists, compile a report that explains the origins of this day! A close-reading crossword puzzle activity is also included to engage all students at any part in this activity!
