This beginning l blends resource includes four hands-on activities to help your students practice spelling and segmenting words with beginning l blends sl, cl, pl, gl, fl, and bl. All the activities focus primarily on phonetically spelled CCVC and CCVCe words and work well as center activities for first and second graders. Easy to adapt and differentiate!
Word building activities focus on the following words:
sl: sled, slide, slice, slip, sled, slam, slug
cl: club, clip, clam, clap
pl: plum, plane, plus, plate, plug
gl: glad, glum, globe, glue (picture for glue includes the word spelled across the bottle)
fl: flag, flap, flat, flute, flame
bl: blade, blot, blend, blast, blush, blog
Here’s how to use these activities in your classroom:
L Blends Puzzles - Students look at the picture and match the blend and word ending to build the word. A recording sheet and 24 puzzles (4 for each l blend) are included. If you do not wish to use the recording sheet, you can make this activity self-checking by writing the word on the back of the card.
L Blends Word Building Mats - Students take a half-page card, look at the picture, and build the word. Sound boxes are provided. Magnet letters work well for this activity, but it can also be done as a write-and-wipe activity using dry erase markers on laminated cards. A recording sheet and 24 cards are included. Several recording sheet options are included, allowing you to differentiate this activity easily. Again, if you do not wish to use the recording sheet, you can make this activity self-checking by writing the word on the back of the card. You may also wish to use a permanent marker to write in part of the word for students who need additional support. I recommend going over the pictures as a whole group before doing this as an independent center activity.
Pancake Plate Making Words - Students match each stack of word-ending pancakes to different l blend plates to make as many words as they can. A recording sheet is included. Many word-making options are possible and a possible answers sheet is included for teacher reference.
See, Build, Write Cut and Paste Printables - Students cut and paste letters from the bottom of the page to build a word matching the picture shown and write the word. Each printable page contains four words to build and write. Three options, varying in difficulty, are included. Just print and go!
