Collective nouns is a great way to enrich students vocabulary and build on their previous knowledge of singular nouns. This unit includes everything you need to teach collective nouns in a fun hands on way with activities such as. . .
* Collective Noun BINGO: Each student gets their own BINGO card with various collective noun pictures and sentence starters that reads similar to, "a group of wolves is called. . ." The teacher then pulls the collective noun cards and read them aloud, and students cover their squares with markers if they have the corresponding picture that matches. The first student to get 4 in a row, or cover the entire board is the winner.
*Collective Noun MATCH: Students play this game like Memory. All cards are flipped over with the pictures and words covered. Students will take turns turning over 2 cards at a time, (one with a sentence starter and picture, and one with the collective nouns) if a student gets a "match" they may keep the cards. Students play until all cards are matched and the student with the most matches at the end is the winner.
*Collective Noun BOOK: This activity can be used when first introducing collective nouns, or as a review when the unit is fished. Each page of the book starts with a sentence stem that reads similar to, "A group of lions is called a" below each sentence the students will write the correct collective noun as well as draw a picture to match.
Collective Noun POCKET CHART: This activity allows students to work in a small group when practicing using collective nouns. Students will match the sentences to correct collective nouns and then record their answers on a recording sheet to keep individual students accountable.
