L.6.1e Recognize variations from standard English in their own and others' writing and speaking.
TWO worksheets that align with this standard. These pages can be used for morning work, assessment, remediation, reinforcement, or a variety of other uses in the classroom.
Sheet 1: 5 Multiple-choice items on two pages.
Directions: The paragraph below was written by a boy to his grandfather, and it uses very casual language. Read the paragraph.
[an 80-word paragraph appears here]
Imagine that instead of a family member, the note is being sent to a friend of the boy’s parents’ whom he visited last weekend. The letter should be more formal, since the parents and this person are co-workers.
Sheet 2: Multiple Choice: 6 sentences on one page.
Directions: Read each sentence. If it seems to be written in formal standard English, write “OK” on the line. If it is written in less formal, slang-like, casual wording, revise the sentence and write it on the line.
There is an Extra Time activity on each sheet. The answers are on the last page. Please see the Preview for this product.
