Product Description
An 8-page lab document that challenges students to investigate Newton’s second and third laws of motion by launching straw rockets to investigate the relationship between net force, mass, and rocket distance, as well as explaining how the launcher works to make the rockets fly.

This product also contains an additional 2-page teacher’s guide, which includes information on where to purchase the materials required for the activity and tips on how to run the lab smoothly.

In this activity, students conduct 2 investigations using straw rockets and a rocket launcher. The first investigation involves changing the net force of the rocket launcher and studying how it affects rocket flight distance. The second investigation involves changing the mass of the rockets and studying how this variable affects rocket flight distance.

Each investigation involves determining the independent and dependent variables, choosing constants, recording data, and constructing a graph. At the end of the activity, students are asked to analyze the results of each investigation in terms of Newton’s second law of motion, but also to use Newton’s third law of motion to explain how the launcher works and why the straw rockets bounce upon impact with the floor.


Investigations That Students are to Perform:

- Keeping the rocket mass the same while changing the net force (Fnet) acting on the rocket
- Keeping the net force (Fnet) the same while changing the mass of the rocket
