Product Description
This 5-page separation technique lab activity challenges students to design a procedure that utilizes multiple separation techniques to separate a mixture of sand, salt and iron filings. After they have successful separated the mixture into its component parts, students are asked to create a comic strip to summarize their technique.

This is my version of the common lab activity involving separating a mixture of common materials such as sand and salt. The activity is meant to be more student-directed, open-ended and creative. In the activity, student teams work together to design a set of procedures to successfully separate each component from the mixture. Student groups have a choice of the separation techniques to use in their procedure (see list below.)

Possible Separation Techniques:

- Manual
- Magnetism
- Filtration
- Evaporation
- Distillation
- Chromatography

Once students have completed the separation portion of the activity, they are instructed to summarize their technique not in an analysis question, but by planning, designing and creating their own comic strip to summarize each step of their procedure. A comic strip template is provided with this product, as well as an answer key and sample of student work.

Contents:

Page 1 states the problem, lists all materials, and describes the challenge.

Page 2 features a blank area for procedure writing and 2 short analysis questions.

Page 3 is a blank comic strip template for students, if desired.

Page 4 is a answer key that suggests a possible procedure.

Page 5 is a sample of student work that shows what the comic strip may look like.
