This is a lab activity about physical weathering (abrasion) and chemical weathering (affect of temperature and surface area). Students will model abrasion by shaking sugar cubes in plastic bottles. Then, they will model the affect of temperature on weathering and the affect of surface area on weathering using sugar cubes.
This is a fun lab for students and is very cost-effective. I have students bring in empty gatorade bottles (they are hard plastic and will last for years). Sugar cubes can be purchased at the supermarket. You will also need scales, beakers, hot water, cold water, and timers.
