Dodge City, the main setting for the TV series Gun Smoke, does still have the Boothill Cemetery and the Long Branch Saloon. Fire Station No. 4 in Lawrence began as a stone barn in 1858 that was a station site on the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Kansas suffered the most casualties of any Union state.
Kansas has most of The Hugoton Gas Field, the largest natural gas field in the U.S. It is under all or much of 10 southwestern counties and is almost 5 times as large as the state of Rhode Island. Coffeyville once had a hailstone fall that weighed over 1.5 pound. The helicopter was invented in 1909 by William Purvis and Charles Wilson of Goodland. The Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham had graham crackers named after him because he was such a stronger supporter of whole-wheat flour products.
