Engage your kinesthetic learners during your writing block!!
I teach Gifted students and the vast majority are kinesthetic learners. I had to find a way to engage them in writing. One day, during a design challenge a light bulb went off in my head! Why not incorporate building and writing? So, I came up with the idea!
You will need Legos or other building blocks. I had parents donate them. I have small containers (purchased from the dollar store) full of legos for partners or groups of 3.
I display the prompt on my white board; however you could print off the pages and create a writing center. We read it aloud and I often give students 3 minutes to reflect in their journal – usually they make a web, draw or make a list. This was explicitly taught.
Then, groups or partners get together and discuss what they will build. They have 15 minutes to build. After 15 minutes, they present to their table mates and then they write for 30 minutes. You could easily walk these writings through the entire week of class with editing and revising.
If you have students take a picture of their Lego creation, you could publish their work online or use it to make a bulletin board.
There are 12 writing prompts included this pack. Many of the writing prompts are aligned to the 4th Grade STAAR Writing Assessment since I am a Texas Teacher. There are both narratives as well as expository text included. However, there are some that are simply creative writing to elicit higher order thinking skills.
