“Military Service: Evolving U.S. Policy” explores the history of policy changes regarding “homosexuals” serving in the military and how these policy changes influenced society. How did the changes in U.S. policy regarding “homosexuals” in military service relate to society's ideas of morality and patriotism?
An integral component of “Military Service: Evolving U.S. Policy” is providing students with the opportunity to engage in academic discourse about the implications of evolving government policy on society’s understandings of morality and patriotism. This Comprehensive Unit of Enquiry (CUE) challenges students intellectually and provides conscious-raising in a communicative enquiry process.
Students will be able to:
1. Make connections between this unit of study and U.S. laws and policies relating to “homosexuals” serving in the U.S. military
2. Defend their position on the case study through oral discussions and writing using knowledge of U.S. military laws and policies
3. Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information in order to answer the case study essential question
