This fun & engaging activity will help you launch your Lord of the Flies experience by turning your classroom into an island for a day. It’s a 1-class period, competitive activity, designed to allow students to dip their toes into some of the themes and content of the novel BEFORE they’ve encountered any of it. After this island experience, as your students begin reading the text, parallel elements will slowly unveil themselves, keeping students engaged and entertained as they work their way through the book.
Students come in cold to the exercise, knowing and expecting nothing related to the text, and they’re challenged to work effectively and cooperate as they engage in a variety of activities. To the extent you can, the teacher should place the instructions in the front of the room and get out of their way, intervening only to officiate rules and parameters. This classroom activity allows you to partake in Lord of the Flies experiential learning, you might say, with plenty of chaos and confusion, but without all the death and destruction.
