There are so many things students COULD tell us, so many things they MIGHT know, DO know, so many things they have knowledge of but they just forget where they learned it, and at the beginning of the year we rarely ask them. I know I did until I came up with this Beginning of Year project that does not require a lot of knowledge. Just give me five simple answers to the question they randomly draw. I would always give my student a choice of picking ONE item to tell me about. I just wanted to know how much they knew and what/where I needed to start teaching from. There was never a lot of writing, just what was in their mind.
It became great reading during the early part of the year, which – I know, I'm weird – but I enjoyed it. It gave me a chance to get to know something about each student.
Here are 32 state history questions, plus one blank set of four just so you may write/ask anything I might have missed. Email me if you find something that should be here – firstname.lastname@example.org . Enjoy your reading, I know I do.
