20 Huey Long & the Great Depression Era
Trading Cards Information
Are you looking for a way for your students to learn some interesting facts about the famous people in Louisiana's Depression era? Here are 20 names of people who in one way or the other effected Louisiana. These are a way to keep it very simple – and not make your students mad – have your students discover these historic figures by allowing them to find out some basic facts and identify what THEY think is important.
Each of my trading cards has the same format and allows students to gather some very brief information about the people who contributed to the history of Louisiana's early 1900s. Decide how many you'd like students to complete and make a mini-research project out of it. My students seemed to really enjoy this format!
Tell the students to write very BRIEFLY, no more than one simple sentence.
For each historical person trading card students will identify the following: Date of Birth, Birthplace, Date of Death, Burial place, Best known for what in Louisiana, Trivia about this Person, and the Legacy or how are they Remembered.
This is NOT a huge writing project but as always – I am trying to 'introduce ELA into my own subject just as I do math items also. Most of my students love the fact that they don't have to write a lot. I generally give only one of two sheets to work with to each student making the entire class work on someone different.
I also have trading cards for the Louisiane/Luisiana, the Louisiana Civil War era, the Civil Rights era, and the 1980+ era. This has worked well for my students so I hope yours find the same success!
I swiped the idea from someone else but thought it might serve my own Louisiana history class well and over the years it done just that. Thank you whoever you are/were. It has served my students well.
Laissez les bons temps rouler!
