My students have always loved the idea that the story they tell is "their own story". They like the idea that they can choose how they are going to draw a figure, place, event, etc. And I tell them that I am not going to judge them on their artwork. I only grade them on how much work they put into this project.
The magazine is a 'fake cover' but it gets the students think about the material - and THINK is all I really want them to do.
This project can work for any chapter, any era. The idea is that it gets the students thinking about the chapter and I don’t care how they get the work is done – only that they do get the assignment done. There are NO stick figures. They are told they have to put clothes on them because I don't want to get arrested for carrying around naked pictures in school. That usually makes them laugh which means they understand what I want. I tell them to put gloves on them, shoes and socks and so on. Suddenly they have real figures.
I have gotten some really good magazine covers over the years.
