I never envisioned my having my own students creating a magazine of each parish in our state but as I began to make my own travels around the state I realized how important it may be for them to 'travel' where money and time would not be an object for them. It became one our/their favorite projects and I made my own trips. As I traveled on the weekends, they traveled 'during the week' and actually led me to stop and take photos and visit places they found and researched.
I would not allow them to do 'our own' parish, but they could do any of the other 63 parishes. My students just loved the idea that I was open to their own ideas and did not judge them on their ideas or artwork. Which after years of doing this activity, they all began to look forward to creating their own parish info. They just wanted to see IF they could lead me on some new adventure. They got to express how much THEY had learned about each parish. They got to 'travel in their mind' to each part of the state while I traveled in real life. I was open to their own interpretation of events, places, and people within the state.
This project would ultimately lead me to creating our own 'history club' in real life known as the Louisiana Explorers. We ended up up doing 8 trips a year – one a month – exploring many of Louisiana great sites. I have just figured I wanted others to get the same enjoyment from what I learned and seen from my own travels around the state in my 27 years teaching Louisiana history.
