Each year, I tell this story just so that students have an 'idea' of what the colonist here and in the American's went through.
It is based loosely on the Acadian story at http://www.acadian-cajun.com/hiscaj2b.htm
I start by passing a copy of the Ship's Log sheet to each student. I ask them to look over the sheet. Then I ask them to tell me a bit about what it is, who is on the list, where they came from, who are they, where did they arrive, etc.
Then I asked them who was #1 on the list? Tell me something about him. How old was he? Why is he #1? Generally the pastors, preachers, church elders scheduled the ships.
The process goes on and on as we go through each member of the ship. We learn about ages, marries, servants, the tailor, the clothier, a husbandman and a kinswoman.
The story is just made up - sort of - but it teaches a lot about who can over to Louisiane or who came to the Americas.
