Whenever I begin my teaching of Louisiane. I begin with a map just to put students into the perspective of what was around us, who controlled what and what cities/towns/settlement were around us...and there was not much.
My students get to label, draw, color many items/places on a map which helps them build their test skills. Over the years my students have always done well on the map part of their test - reading and interpreting various maps. Plus they have to create a map key - which is a very simple chore for now. Plus my 'art degree' always loves doing these for them too.
This map includes:
the Great Lakes,
St. Lawrence River,
Fort St. Louis,
plus trade routes and various colonies
