LUNA is Literary Devices and Figurative Language Card Game I created for my 10th grade Intensive Reading class. I found that my students were not retaining information related to these standards and determined we needed an engaging alternative to the usual. LUNA is a 2-10 person card game in which students must match figurative language and literary devices to the cards played before them, with the goal in mind to be the first to discard all of your cards. This soon became a favorite during Differentiated Instruction times and students began to quickly identify figurative language and literary devices they previously could not recall! The game is composed primarily of one type of card "Example Cards", that give examples of language and devices that must be matched by fellow players. There are also "Figurative Language Type" cards that can be used when students are still having difficulty remembering these terms and giving the teacher opportunity to review them as the group plays. Last I threw in some "Wild", "Reverse" and "Draw Two" cards that help promote my students' competitive spirit. The cards also come with explicit directions in regards to proposed rules and expectations. Also, please print on card stock or laminate to preserve quality of cards.
