Gary Soto’s short story “La Bamba” is one that consistently pleases. If you need a light story with a heavy emphasis on foreshadowing and plot development from exposition to climax to resolution, then this is a wise choice. I use it as a read aloud and of course play Ritchie Valens’s “La Bamba” to bring the story alive. In this document, you will find a twelve-question matching quiz with key. The students match a quotation with the interpretation of the quotation. As a bonus, I have included (gratis) the lyrics for “La Bamba” and a Spanish to English translation. As a pre-reading activity, I usually assign students to groups and ask them to write a plot SUMMARY of a story in which a student enters a talent show and something goes awry. After, we share the ideas and then read Soto’s story.
