I love teaching this song to Spanish 1 Students. It's an entertaining song to play daily for a week. Songs always break up the awkward transition from class period to period and sets the tone for a positive and fun learning experience.

How I used it in my classroom:
First, you will want to find the song on youtube to follow along with the original video which is wonderfully entertaining. Here is the link to the official video.

Play this song as soon as your students enter the classroom for a week. The music sets the tone for engagement as they sing along. It also helps ease the transition from class to class for the students .

Day 1 Pass out the Vocabulary from this Lesson whether you would like 15 or 5, the choice is up to you. I chose 15 to go along with my other "20" vocabulary words in which only 5 would make it onto the actual test. I always have my students add vocab. to "Study Blue" App. in their iPads but you could also have them write them in their notebooks. I would walk around and make sure they adding the vocabulary to Study Blue. I would have the students "try" to figure out the meaning of the song with the vocabulary, prior knowledge, and context clues (think about the video also) in groups of 2. Have students fill out "Significado de la Canción" worksheet. Then we would go over the worksheet together. Then we would break down the song together over "The Powerpoint" They would write in on the lined lyrics paper for notes. (I would actually have this on their iPads and they would write the meaning on the lines in their iPads. I would walk around and make sure they did it.


Day 2 Play the song. Encourage students to Sing along to the song, modeling it yourself always helps! Immediately after, Have students flip through the vocabulary flashcards on Study Blue obtaining 70% or higher. Have students show the score when done or have students review the vocabulary from their notes with a partner. This always counts towards daily participation grade from me. Once finished, pass out crossword to do at end of class if have time. I always would then move on to whatever else I was teaching at this point.

Day 3 Play song. Collect crossword and peer grade them. Have students flip through the vocabulary flashcards on Study Blue obtaining 80% or higher. Have students show the score when done or have students review the vocabulary from their notes with a partner. This always counts towards daily participation grade from me. Pass out word search to do at end of class or for homework.

Day 4 Play song. Collect Word Search and peer grade them. Have students flip through the vocabulary flashcards on Study Blue obtaining 90% or higher. Have students show the score when done or have students review the vocabulary from their notes with a partner. This always counts towards daily participation grade from me.
Pass out cloze activity to do at end of class or for homework.

Day 5 Play song. Mini-quiz over vocabulary from this week just have students number their papers to 15 or 5. Have students turn in quizzes to you. Have students get out cloze activity and peer grade them. Finish the rest of your teaching plans.

This packet is not intended to take up a lot of class time or a huge part of your vocabulary, grammar, or culture but is used to add a little fun to the classroom and engage the students daily with this fun song!

Song Meaning:
In this song Juanes wears the black shirt because he is in mourning over a lost love. “Hoy mi amor esta de luto” Today my love is in mourning. His lady love broke his heart in more ways than one. She may have left him, “Y desde que tú te fuiste” And ever since you left….
And/Or she may have been unfaithful “Y fue pura todita tu mentira, Que maldita mala suerte la mía, Que aquel día te encontré”
“And was completely your lie, what bad luck I have, that day I found you”….so now Juanes is wearing a black shirt to spend his time in mourning.
