This is a PowerPoint presentation with 25 different menus that are written in Spanish. Each menu is one page. The 26th slide contains basic questions in English about the menus and asks the students to complete the questions about the menus on notebook paper.
I have printed the slides out in color and laminated the menus to give them a more authentic feel, but that is not necessary, though it helps. I have the students pass the menus around as they are seated in groups of 4. The groups of 4 are given 4 - 5 menus at a time and given about 7 minutes to discuss and jot down information. Since I have 45 minute class periods, this takes the entire class period. It would be ideal to have 10 - 15 more minutes, but I fit this into a single class period.
Suggestions for follow-up activities might be: 1) have the students create their own menus, 2) have the students write a skit in Spanish where they order from one of the menus, 3) have the students research a dish of their choosing from what they read on the menus and write the recipe in Spanish.
