Product Description
This project is an ideal summative assessment in a unit on school vocabulary. Students will invent the perfect school, design and label a map of it in Spanish, and write about what students do in 12 different labelled places on the map. Students can base their maps on their real-life school, a fictional school (like Hogwarts), or a totally made-up school that encompasses their passions and interests. For example, my students have invented schools related to sports, schools made out of food, schools designed for aliens in space, or a school in which all the teachers are arctic sea creatures. I always tell them anything goes as long as it is school appropriate.

This is a great project to unleash some teenage creativity, learn about your students’ interests, and increase engagement, but it is also a good one to practice presentational writing skills. I used this project with great success as a way to practice school vocabulary, –ar verbs, and adverbs of frequency. You could also practice “tener + que” and “hay +que” structures by directing them to write about what students “have to” do in each location on their map. The rubric is based on an ACTFL proficiency rubric for novice learners, so you have flexibility to direct them on specific grammatical structures if you’d like, or to simply grade for proficiency.
