This book is special to me because it comes from my heart, each character represents someone very special in my life.
During my family unit, I begin with some basic vocabulary with my students using the color flash cards in this package of materials. I like to cut and laminate the color flash cards and attach them to craft sticks with a hot glue gun. I keep these in small labeled paint cans for a quick time filler.
I print the grayscale flash cards on card stock for my students. They keep them in plastic sandwich bags for partner practice and games like memory.
I print the posters in this package on cardstock and laminate them. I place them on our "theme" bulletin board and move them to our Spanish word wall at the end of this unit. I take them down and use blue painting tape to post then up for a quick game of four corners (the directions are included in this download).
The first time we read this book, I project it onto my active board to read it with my class. My younger students are so excited to raise their hand and “guess” what family member Reina is describing. They love to “help” her with her English. This interactive story is a GREAT way for students to practice their listening skills. With my older students, I have them write what family member they think she is describing on each page in their Spanish journals. As I walk around students let me “peek” to see if they are correct. I take note of students that may need some additional practice. I work with those students during cooperative group time.
We use this book as a springboard for learning. We begin learning and using descriptive words, talk about sentence structure, grammar rules, and punctuation.
The activity sheets provided in this package can be used for homework, independent practice, during cooperative groups, or for assessment.
My FAVORITE part of this unit is creating the family tree with my students. It makes a BEAUTIFUL gift to families on Valentine’s Day. I always find a helpful parent that is willing to get cheap frames from the dollar store to frame them. It really makes it extra special.
I hope you enjoy my book and other stories about Abuela Rosa and her “familia”.
