These are reading comprehension activities to accompany the reading of Emilia Pardo Bazán’s short story, “Madre Gallega”. The story is in the public domain and thus I have included it with the activities for your convenience. This activity is for upper-level Spanish students. It worked well in my AP Spanish Language class. I have included a very brief introduction to the work mentioning the author and her naturalist style. There are 10 multiple choice plot questions, 11 free response questions that require a bit of analysis and 12 brief quotes from the story where the students have to re-phrase the figurative language into simpler Spanish. The story takes place during the Spanish Civil War which would allow for an easy correlation to a culture/ history lesson. A full answer key is provided.
