I read this book during our unit on clothing. Prior to reading this book, I build background knowledge of Spanish vocabulary relating to clothing with my students. We have lessons, center activities (using flash cards), and learn many items of clothing. Students can work together in pairs for partner practice.
When we read, it is exciting for students to “guess” what is in Abuela Rosa’s bag by listening to the description. As we turn the page, students get to see if their guess was correct. I have my older students draw or write their guess on a sheet of paper. Younger students just raise their hand when they think they know the answer.
This book works as a springboard to discuss and learn about language skills such as grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. We talk about how Abuela Rosa is learning English, and we are learning Spanish. Her story can help us learn more about how the Spanish language is alike and different from our own. Learn Spanish and have fun!
